DANCE COMPONENT

Our dance coordinators choreograph and teach various Philippine traditional dances under the guidance of the assistant coordinators of dance, Frenz Cabison and Kathy Valencerina. Most of our cast members involve themselves in SPCN through dance.

ASSISTANT COORDINATORS OF DANCE

The Assistant Coordinators of Dance oversee the dance component of SPCN. They advise and mentor SPCN’s fourteen dance coordinators, providing them with constant support, guidance, and the tools to lead successful suites. They also organize and coordinate the Sayaw ng Silangan dance troupe, providing students the opportunity to perform cultural dances of the Philippines for our greater-UCLA community.

KATHY VALENCERINA

Assistant Coordinator of Dance

"I joined Committee because SPCN is my home, my second family, the space I love endlessly.  Being part of Committee for the past two years has been the greatest blessing in my life.  It has given so much more to me than I can ever give to it."

FRENZ CABISON

Assistant Coordinator of Dance

"If you want to walk fast, walk alone. If you want to walk far, walk together. My most favorite part about this whole journey is when I have finally realized and felt that home is not a place-- it is the people that you love. Thank you SPCN for being my home and one of my greatest adventures."

BIANCA BONDOC

"SPCN is one of my greatest joys coming into UCLA, and I joined this committee to continue bringing communities together. Moreover, the amazing experiences I’ve shared with Arnis constantly brings me back to this space, reminding me the work one does for the community is returned twice-fold!"

"My favorite SPCN memory was being at the 2AM Rondalla run my freshman year. It was such a fun night and staying up late with the suite meant that we all got to bond together. Seeing everyone power through how tired we were and stick together as a family til the very end was so liberating and inspiring. It made me realize that SPCN truly was my home, inspiring me to join Committee."

CHUCK PARCON

"My favorite memory in SPCN was the last run thru we had during Winter Quarter this year, I got to see my suite pop off and they did so well and it honestly brought me to tears because we had been working together for the whole quarter and their hard work definitely showed in their performance."

"My favorite memory in SPCN was doing the Arnis chant after Rondalla at ~2am in the middle of the Sunken Gardens. That night with everyone made me realize I had found a family at UCLA. I joined committee in hopes of helping others also feel at home."

DANIEL ABAD

"I joined SPCN because I did not have a big Pilipino Cultural presence growing up: I never learned the language, knew the history, etc. So joining SPCN felt like my way to grow closer to this part of my life that had always been there and it has been one of the best experiences in my life."

"One of the most memorable moments I have of SPCN is all of Cast singing ‘Stand By Me’ when the music cut off during one of our showcases. Although it was cold and late--everyone joining in to sing and laugh together was an incredible reminder of the strength and love this space gives me."

"Of the most vivid SPCN memories I have, my favorite was when the entire cast watched the show from backstage. Everyone was dressed in their costumes and sitting in the Red Room watching the live recording of the stage. I felt a sense of pride as everyone showcased what they had been working on for the past year on Royce stage. It was a surreal experience that reminded me why I love my community."

"During my first year, I found a home in SPCN, and I wanted to create a similar space for others. I saw a position on committee as a way to give back to the community while also learning more about our cultures in the process. Opportunities of both giving and growing are rare to find — and this one definitely did not disappoint."

MASA COORDINATORS

SETH EVASCO

"My favorite memory in SPCN was being at Royce in front of hundreds for the first time while performing for both my friends and family in the crowd and on stage with me. The moment goes by so quickly but the memory and feeling will always last."

JUSTIN GAMBOA

"I joined Committee to continue my predecessor’s legacy of uplifting urban choreography, street-dance, and hip-hop as meaningful art forms/subcultures. In addition, I wanted to unveil how Pilipinx and Pilipinx American identities uniquely fit into the narratives of these forms."

MINDANAO COORDINATORS

ANGELA CORDOVA

"I never saw myself being a dance coordinator, but I was inspired by my experience in SPCN as a first year and my Kappa Psi Epsilon sisters to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone. My favorite memory was standing on Royce stage at the end of SPCN 42 and every single bonding experience with our Mindanao suite this year!"

GINA MAGLANOC

"Despite being firmly against becoming a dance coord all of my first year, I took a risk and applied to a position I wasn’t sure I could do. I felt as if there was color missing in my life, and the only place I saw any was during Vinta dance practice last year. And I knew as soon as I joined that I made the right decision, as joining committee filled my world with art."

RURAL COORDINATORS

MARIA POBLETE

"Although I was adamantly against dancing for 18 years of my life, I took a leap of faith by joining SPCN in my first year. The joy of performing on stage and celebrating one another inspired me to apply for committee and share this experience with others."

EDWARD SABALBURO

"My favorite memory from SPCN was being shouted out by the 42nd committee during their post run thru evaluations for helping with props during my first year. Through that experience I was finally able to consider UCLA my home and SPCN my family."
